Remaining Independent at Home

ASSISTANCE FOR LIVING AT HOME

The following services provide information to assist individuals to remain at home when illness or disability interferes with their independence. Services range from 24-hour nursing care to help with housework. Insurance coverage is very limited. In some situations, Medicaid may pay. ADULT DAY CARE

Adult day centers offer a supervised facility for frail older adults. Services may include social activities, hot meals, physical therapy and other specialized exercises, and group activities for full or part day.  Contact individual programs for information on fees, hours of operation and participant qualifications.

HOME AND PERSONAL CARE SERVICES

Services may include: light housework, meal preparation, shopping, laundry, transportation, and companionship – dressing, bathing, toileting. Medicare and supplemental insurance do not pay for these services. Long term insurance may cover the cost of services.

COPES: Community Options Program Entry System

A special Medicaid program that provides services to persons who meet the Medicaid requirements for nursing home care, but who do not want to go to a nursing home. COPES offers alternative care arrangements which may include care at home, at an adult family home, or in an assisted living facility. Recipients are also eligible for medical services reimbursed by Medicaid. To determine eligibility and obtain services, contact:
